Trauma Therapy — EMDR & ART
Trauma therapy in Victoria, BC.
Neurobiologically grounded.
Trauma doesn't always look like a single dramatic event. For many people, it's the accumulation of experiences that quietly shaped how they see themselves, how they respond to stress, and how safe they feel in their own bodies. It often shows up as anxiety, hypervigilance, relationship difficulties, or a persistent sense that something is wrong — long before the word "trauma" feels like it applies.
I offer EMDR and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) — two of the most rigorously researched trauma treatments available — for individuals in Victoria, BC and across Alberta and BC virtually.
Get in TouchUnderstanding Trauma
Trauma is a neurological event.
Not a character flaw.
When the brain experiences something overwhelming, it stores that memory differently than ordinary events. Instead of being filed away as the past, traumatic memories remain neurologically active — meaning the brain and body continue to respond as though the threat is still present. This is why trauma shows up in the body, in relationships, and in everyday reactions that can feel disproportionate or confusing.
Understanding this isn't just reassuring — it's clinically useful. EMDR and ART are both designed to work directly at the neurological level, targeting how traumatic memories are stored and processed rather than simply talking about them. Many clients notice meaningful shifts in fewer sessions than they expect.
Trauma may be a factor if you experience:
Treatment Approaches
Two of the most effective
trauma treatments available.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
EMDR is one of the most extensively researched trauma treatments in existence, with strong support from the WHO, the APA, and major health organizations worldwide. It works by using bilateral stimulation — typically eye movements — while you briefly attend to a distressing memory. This process allows the brain to reprocess the memory so that it loses its emotional charge and is integrated as the past, rather than experienced as present threat.
EMDR does not require you to describe your experience in detail. Many clients find this a significant relief. It is effective for PTSD, complex trauma, sexual trauma, childhood trauma, and a range of anxiety and stress-related conditions.
ART
Accelerated Resolution Therapy
ART is a newer, highly effective trauma modality that combines elements of EMDR, imagery rescripting, and somatic awareness. It works rapidly — many clients experience meaningful resolution of a specific trauma within one to five sessions — and like EMDR, it does not require detailed verbal recounting of distressing events.
ART is particularly well-suited for clients who want a structured, efficient process. It has strong research support for PTSD, phobias, grief, and trauma-related sexual difficulties, and it works well alongside other therapeutic approaches.
